'Troy Story'
Sergeant Troy isn't the most broad-minded of men, but the actor who plays him is just a big softie...
Sergeant Troy isn't the most liberal copper on the box and, according to Daniel Casey, who plays the Midsomer Murders detective, he has more hang-ups than a cloakroom.
'He cannot talk easily to people who are not like him. He is not keen on people with money, he is sexist and he can't deal with gays.'
No wonder the politically incorrect Troy doesn't have much going for him romantically. This couldn't be further from the truth for 26-year-old Daniel, who is nestling into domestic bliss with his interior designer girlfirend Ellie, whom he met three years ago at a party.
'I saw her across the room, I was knocked out and we've been together since. We've set up home, I've got my first mortgage and we've bought a fast car. Can life hold more ?'
Life has already been good to Daniel, who made his debut, aged 11, when his TV presenter father Luke intorduced him to the screen. 'I did a five-minute spot when Dad was on The Money Programme. I talked about banking opportunites for children,' he admits with a blush. 'If I ever get conceited now, all I have to do is get out that tape. The white trainers were dreadful - and the jeans!'
His subsequent TV shows have been less humbling. He played an angry lorry driver in Peak Practice, another Policeman in Our friends from the North and a series of roles in dramas such as A Touch of Frost, The Bill and The Grand. 'People are beginning to recognise me. So far, they know my face but can't recall where from. They tend to think I was at school with their brother!'
Not all of them though, he gets fan letters from 14-year-old girls. 'One of them was most appreciative whan a newspaper called me "splendidly thuggish" though I don't know why.'
For a thug, he seems to have a very soft side hidden away. Ellie reveals he even cries during Animal Hospital.
Now what would Sergeant Troy make of that ?
