Child Sexuality in Film by: Amanda Rodriguez
Pretty Baby (1978)
Directed by Louis Malle, Pretty Baby debuted at a time when there was public uproar over
child abuse, child porn, and child prostitution. Some worried that young Brooke Shield's
would be traumatized by her adult role in the film, but Malle had hired a female
scriptwriter to make sure that the film was dealt with in a sensitive manner. The
fictional yet historically inspired drama told the story of a virginal, jaded 12 year old
named Violet (played by Brooke Shields) who is a child prostitute with her New Orleans
mother. Both were often photgraphed nude by a man named Ernest who also proposed to marry
the young girl. In one scene, Violet's virginity is actually auctioned off to the highest
bidder ($400). Various versions of the film were edited. Some critics recognized that the
film portrayed Brooke Shield's as a defenseless and naive daughter used by her
manipulative mother.
Hounddog (2007)
In the film Houndog, Dakota Fanning plays an Elvis-obsessed preteen from a broken home,
whose problematic childhood goes from bad to worse when an older teenaged boy brutally
sexually assaults her. During filming in August of 2006, it was reported that according
to sources on set, "Dakota was clearly visible as she was groped, licked, pawed and
humped by an actor take, after take, after take." The disturbing scene lasts a few
minutes but is not graphic. There is no nudity, the scene is very darkly lit and only
Fanning?s face and hand are shown. Dakota lashes out at the critics and is quick to
defend her work and the movie overall and said that it's called acting and that it's not
a real rape. Many people are outraged by the rape scene because Dakota is only 12 and
they believe she doesn't have the ability to make those types of decisions and that she
is being taken advantage of.
