The Gordon Setter or the "Black & Tan" of years ago, strangely enough is the only gun-dog amongest the native breeds of Scotland & yet it is the one that possesses many characteristics of the Irish & Red Setters, along with some very special ones of its own. There are many records showing that the "Black & Tan" existed as long ago as the year 1600, it was the 4th Duke Alexander Gordon that was largely responsible for establishing the breed. Duke Alexander Gordon named his home - Gordon Castle suitated North of Fochabers near the River Spey. Renowned for his famous breed of Setters he also gave then his name "Gordon Setter.
Whilest often it has been denied, the story goes that Duke Gordon heard of a shepard's Collie that became an excellent finder of Grouse at a time when his own Setters were at fault. Having confirmed these facts, he decided to breed from the Collie & thereby originated the "Black & Tan Setter." Following the Death of Duke Gordon the Setters were sold but were re-established again by the Duke of Richmond and the 5th Duke of Gordon. The first prize award to a Gordon Setter was in 1683 all first three places were held by the Gordon Setter.
True Gordon Setters are accredited at being excellent dual purpose dogs suited to working the field & for the Show bench. They are alert, easily trained, being quick to learn, they aren't aggressive, shy or highly strung. Not the typical kennel dog, they must have affection, for proper development & that affection is returned in more than full measure with unwavering loyalty to their owners. They make excellent pets, very much companionable having a strong protective sense towards their family & home. A friend you will never forget.
