Diminishing Epilogue

It was true, what they said about love abiding in the details. Had anyone asked Logan, before the accident why he loved Remy, he would hardly have thought to mention the way the kid leaned against him when they watched TV together, the funny little walk Remy had when he was going to do something he didnt really want to,  the small mannerisms Remy used to disguise his shyness, the way he ducked his head before he told a joke, the way hed toss his head so that his hair fell down to shade his eyes as he watched for someones reaction. Logan had never noticed how Remys face lit up when he entered a room, until that first day he did and the Cajun hadnt even blinked.

There was no break-up, no big scene, no fight. There wasnt a need for any. What had been between them was gone, had simply ceased to exist. Logans own promise to love Remy, crippled, scarred, anything, still haunted him. It was one of the many promises about the Cajun he had broken. But in reality he had no choice. It was impossible for him to love Remy as he was now, cold, distant, inhuman.

Emotion touches everything, and so nothing of Remys old self remained. Most of the X-men adapted to this new ghost among them, well or not depending on their characters. They grieved for the Remy they had lost, but that was a continuous process and one that would take years, regardless of the new stranger in their midst, wearing the skin of an old friend.

Wolverine was an exception. Incapable of loving Remy and equally as incapable of indifference, a steady anger began to grow in him. Everyone saw it, but no one knew exactly what to do. Remy could not be hurt by Logan again. This time, Logan was only in danger of injuring himself.

Even Remy noticed Logans growing hostility. Although he was incapable of being affected on any personal level by it, intellectually he felt its wrongness. It was he who first broached the subject with Scott.

I think I should move back to the boathouse.

Scott stared. Weve been through this before.

Its not the same. You know it. Everything is different now.

If this is because of Logan....

It is, also because of the rest of the team. I make them nervous.

Remy, you shouldnt let that bother you.

It doesnt bother me Scott. Me moving wont hurt me, but it will help the others.

I shouldnt have let the others ostracize you before, why should I do it now?

Because before you brought me back for the sake of the team. Thats why youre going to let me go now.

And what was there to say to that? Four months after returning from Sinisters lab, Remy LeBeau packed his bags and moved from the mansion back to the boat house.
