GRADING POLICIES
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Medical Terminology Grading
The GES medical terminology course is graded via computer.  These grades will not count toward your medical transcription certificate of completion, but your Facilitator is always available to answer questions.

Sending Work to Facilitator
There are two ways to send your work to your Facilitator.
     1.  You may print out a hard copy of your report and send it to your Facilitator via first-class mail. Your Facilitator's mailing address is on the front sheet of the student information documents..  Your Facilitator will grade the report and send it back to you via first-class mail.
     2.  If you have Microsoft Word as your word processing program, you may send each report as an attachment to an e-mail.  Send only
one document per e-mail.  Your Facilitator will grade the report and e-mail the graded report back to you.

NOTE:  Your Facilitator uses Microsoft Word.  If you have Microsoft Works or WordPerfect, those programs do not convert to Microsoft Word when they are e-mailed.  Please mail your Facilitator via first-class mail a printed copy of any reports transcribed using Microsoft Works or WordPerfect.

Medical Transcription Grading
Each report is graded separately.
     1.  If a medical or English term is spelled wrong, one point is taken off.  If a wrong word has been used, one point is taken off.  This is done for each instance in which the word is misspelled or misusedeven if the patient name is misspelled on every page.    These errors will be highlighted in yellow on reports that are graded in Microsoft Word and returned to you by e-mail.  On a printed report, these errors will be circled.
     2.  For errors in grammar, punctuation, style, and formatting, point is taken off each time the error occurs.   These errors will be highlighted in blue on reports that are graded in Microsoft Word and returned to you by e-mail.  On a printed report, proofreaders marks will be used (see page 215 in the Hillcrest Beginning Medical Transcription textbook for proofreaders marks).
     3.  Words which require informative remarks will be highlighted in green on reports that are graded in Microsoft Word and returned to you by e-mail.  These remarks are for your information only and no points are counted off. You may see the comments in the same way that you see comments about errors.
On reports sent by e-mail, sometimes the Facilitator makes comments about your errors.  To see the comments, put your cursor on the yellow, blue, or green highlighted word (dont click), and a comment box will pop up with the comment.  These comments are also listed at the end of the report as endnotes.
     4.  The Grammar/Punctuation/Style Rules Review, included in the student information documents,, is to be turned in to your Facilitator to be graded.  It counts 20% of your course grade.  You may print it out, answer the questions, and mail it to your Facilitator, or copy and paste it into a Microsoft Word document, answer the questions using a bright blue font, and e-mail it to your Facilitator.
     5. If you will be e-mailing your work to your Facilitator and you are using the forms from the diskette in the back of the
Hillcrest Medical Center Beginning Medical Transcription Course text-workbook, please unprotect every document before transcribing, then erase the pink or tan shading on the template before beginning to type.  This will enable your Facilitator to grade your work using the procedures outlined above.  Instructions for unprotecting the document are in the on-line student instructions under Difficulty with diskette?.

In summary
: Misspelling, wrong word used (English word or medical term) = minus 1 point.
Words or phrases omitted = minus 1 point per word
Errors in grammar, punctuation, style, format = minus 1/2 point each occurrence

There are 71 reports and 15 transcription tests in the Hillcrest material, of which the Facilitator will grade 25 (listed below)..  The student grades the balance of the work via the solutions on the Gatlin web site.   If sending work by
e-mail, send one attached document per e-mail. You may e-mail each report as you finish it.  You do not have to wait until you have finished all reports for an inpatient case.  If sending printed reports by first-class mail, send one inpatient case at a time after you finish it or several outpatient reports at a time.  Please do not wait until you have transcribed all the reports and then send them to the Facilitator.  This will delay grading of your work and delay receiving your certificate.  The material to be graded by the Facilitator includes the following:

Inpatient Case 1              4 reports                           Female Reproductive System
Inpatient Case 4              4 reports                           Dermatology
Inpatient Case 9              5 reports                           Lymphatic System

Grammar/Punctuation/Style Rules Review from the student information documents

The 25 transcribed reports above will equal 50% of the final grade average.

The Grammar/Punctuation/Style Rules Review from the student information documents will equal 20% of the final grade average.

The Final Exam (which is an open-book exam) taken at the end of Unit 20 on the GES web site will equal 30% of the final grade average.  It includes material from the text-workbook, the student information documents, and the transcribed reports.

Transcription Grading Scale is based on 85 to 100.   A grade below 85 = redo.

On the job an MT is required to have
97.5 to 98 percent accuracy, sometimes higher, depending on how and where the MT works.   Medical transcriptionists cannot be too accurate in the medical records (legal documents) they create.
