Biographies
Lisa Huang '02 (violin) special-orders her bewitched violin strings from an obscure maker in the depths of the Macedonian jungles. Sentient and malicious, they are specially conditioned to never stay in tune and to slip at key moments. Lisa is a prospective French
literature/Chinese studies
double major from New York. She studied with Anna Pelekh and was a member
of the New York Youth Symphony and the New York All-State Symphony before
coming to Swarthmore, where she has played with the college orchestra for
the past two years. She feeds the hungry violist with her points (for the Non-Swatties: points are part of a meal plan here at Swarthmore and let you buy stuff without money).
When not drugging innocent fruit flies in the name of science, Lisa Ladewski '02 (violin), is a majoring in biology, swimming, and being kicked out of Lang Music Building repeatedly by irate Public Safety officers who insist that midnight is not an appropriate time for a quintet to rehearse. Following in her parents' footsteps, she insisted
on beginning her violin studies at age two. Since then, she has
played in myriad ensembles, (including the Michigan Youth Symphony,
the Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts String Quartet, the Pioneer
High School Symphony Orchestra, where she was a 1998 Concerto Competition
winner, and the Swarthmore College Orchestra), but none as cool as the quintet that serves exotic cuisine at each of its recitals. Lisa has also attended the Indiana
University String Academy and the All-State program at Interlochen. She would like to thank
her parents and sister for continuing to support her music.
Nori Heikkinen '03 (viola) often looks at her bed longingly and sighs, remembering the good old days of her pass-fail semester when she used to be able to sleep. When she is not staying up until 5 am learning random computer languages on a whim, Nori is trekking around Lang and Philadelphia with her beautiful red viola case (which is slightly smaller than the old one, holding only three pachyderm instead of a while herd). She plays in the Philadelphia
Youth Orchestra, sings in the women's a capella group Cantatrix, and often forgets how many ensembles she is actually in at the current moment. A prospective music-linguistics-computer science major, she still lives in her own reality, deplores plagal cadences, loves the locrian mode, and takes viola lessons from Joseph do Pasquale.
Oliver Hsu '03 ('cello) has created a small, pockmarked minefield of holes in the concert hall stage floor from the sharp endpin of his instrument. When other Swatties are out partying Friday nights, he has bee known to sit down in Lang with his Cello and emerge five hours later, oblivious to the passing of time. He has been playing the cello since age eight, and the piano since age ten. Oliver is a prospective engineering and computer science double major with a partial fulfillment of the premed requirements, although he has been toying with the possibility of adding music or math instead of premed. Also a sports fanatic, he spends hours upon hours playing basketball and soccer and passionately follows the latest events of his favorite soccer team. His current teacher is Vivian Barton.
Sarah Marsh '00, piano, is a double major in chemistry and
economics from
the San Francisco Bay Area. She has studied the piano since the age of
eight. She currently studies with Meng-Chieh Liu in Philadelphia and her
previous teachers include Trula Whelan and Hans Boepple. Prior to
attending Swarthmore, she performed in various music festivals and
competitions in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1990, she took first place
in the California Professional Music Teachers Association Concerto
Competition, and in 1994 and 1996 she was finalist in the San Francisco
Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. She most recently performed
the first movement of Beethoven's Piano Concerto no. 1 with
Orchestra
2001. Besides playing the piano, Sarah also enjoys performing violin with
the Swarthmore College Orchestra and hopes to continue her music studies
as she tackles the job market in the coming year.
The Midnight Quintett would like to acknowledge the faculty and staff of
the Swarthmore College Department of Music and
Dance for their
support. The Quintett would like to thank David Szepessy for his patience,
insight, and unwavering support through every midnight hour.
