The Great Power
Prologue
The young man sits at his polished oak desk and slumps in his chair - which matches the desk - with each of his arms draped over the armrests. He stares out the window: just moments before the sun had been shining; now the rains fall so hard that he can scarcely see anything. His right hand limply holds an inkpen as his mind wander back to his work. There is a knock on his door, and he quickly straightens as the thin blonde enters his study. Ser, the junior company leader says. Yes Ikit? The young man stands as he speaks. There is a woman here to see you, Ikit replies. A woman? You may send her in, he answers. Yes, ser. The young junior company leader disappears from the room and continues through the stone hallway of the headquarters. The young man hurriedly straightens the papers, which are scattered, about his desk, and stacks them neatly to the side, making sure that nothing is seen that shouldnt be. He steps out from behind his desk and makes his way towards an armless black oak chair that sits unused beside the door. Picking it up, he carries it to his desk, where he neatly places it in front. He barely has time to reposition himself behind his desk before another knock appears on his door and Ikit re-enters - this time followed by a woman. The young captain stands and gestures towards the chair he has set before his desk. Have a seat. He then nods to Ikit, and the junior company leader leaves the room, closing the large wooden door behind him. The young man turns his attention back to the woman. She is very thin, with very red and sunken eyes. She is extremely white - deathly white, and has rich red-brown hair. What can I do for you? he asks, reseating himself. Captain Nesau... her voice trails off. She places a small slip of paper on the desk and, setting her hand on top of it, slowly slides it across the desk until it is right in front of him. When she removes her hand, he begins to read. The words are familiar to him. One will come, being more powerful than any before His time. Out of a great and glorious city He will come. Neither He nor anyone else will know of the great power He holds until He is grown. He will leave His family and venture out, with few companions, and in search, find eternity. No one has, no one does, and no one will have more power than this One. Nesau looks up from the slip of paper, confused at why the woman has given a piece of the Great Prophecies, but she has disappeared. He scans the room, but sees her nowhere. Still holding the paper, he stands, goes to the door, and looks out. All that is within sight is Ikit, who sits behind his desk in the hallway. Ser? Ikit asks. Did you see the woman leave? No, ser. The halls have been empty and your door has remained shut. Ikit pauses. Is there a problem, captain? Nesau stares for a moment. Leaving the question unanswered, he returns to his study, where he seats himself behind his desk and ponders what has just happened. A cold chill sweeps over him, and he quietly slumps in his chair and stares out the window. The lightning brightens his study and he thunder shakes the building, but he doesnt seem to notice.
