| Sunday 16th Nov 2008 - F.P. Sports Ground Midlife Caledonian 5 - 5 Bookham Old Boys A dull overcast Autumn lunchtime greeted the teams as they took to the field of play at 1pm and there was a festive note to the occasion as Midlife Caledonian were without Patrick M who was absent due to the fact that he was having his first Christmas dinner of 2008. (The first of many we are sure). This was our first game against Bookham Old Boys and they turned out to be very worthy opponents. They were all of the right age group and played in the right spirit. The game was thrilling 'end-to-end' stuff and although the second Bookham goal was deemed to be offside by everybody exepct the linesman (yours truly) the score stood at 2 - 2 at halftime. When asked by my teammates why I hadn't flagged for offside I opted for the Arsene Wenger spproach and said: "I did not see it". Mildfe Caledonian had Andy Bedford between the sticks and Gordon from FP Vets playing up front alongside Alex. With Nick Ranaldo on the wing and Fit Neil supporting from midfield it was a very potent attacking force. John Dean made his second appearance at right back and played a blinder in a solid defence. Sir Aex would have been proud. The second half saw Midlife Caledonian take control and rattle in few more including a wonderful power-house header from Mark S and with 15 minutes to go Midlife Caledonian were 5 - 3 up. Yes, 5 - 3 to the good but the game somehow ended a 5 all draw. A post-match clubhouse discussion concluded that our undoing was down to a flurry of late substitutions so there are some lessons to be learned there. As I was running the line at the time I absolve myself of all responsibilty and if asked I will say "I did not see it". All in all a very good game and thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. Man of the match: Andy Bedford - He kept us in the game time and again. Match report by: Jocky |
