F.P. Vets 7 - 3 Midlife Caledonian

The Midlfe Caledonian squad of 14 was depleted before the kick off as Mark Evans was called away at the last minute and thus we were to be without his much needed presence in the back four. That, plus the fact that we were also without a 'proper' goalie did not, I feel, bode well. However, it was beautiful, dry  autumn morning in the shadow of Box Hill with the pitch slightly on the soft side, but still taking a stud,  and the odd gusts of a chill breeze causing the nearby trees to  shower the pitch in flurries of brown and golden leaves.  This was also the day that saw our former striker John Dean take his new position in the back four where  he aquitted himself so well that it was assumed that he always played there.

The goals weren't long in coming and the score was 1- 1 in the first 15 minutes but then F.P. Vets  notched a couple more and  were 3-1 up at  halftime. Midlife Caledonian new boy Nick Ranaldo was causing havoc on the right wing and was getting in some great crosses to where Graeme and Fit Neil were on the prowl. Nick was receiving  close attention from the FP Vets lads who had three players tackling him at one point, but he  still got away from them, sprinted to the by-line and pinged one in to the far post.

The second half saw us make a great start and thanks to a goal by Nick and a thumping header by Alex from a Cooper Cross we leveled the scores at 3 -3 and F.P. Vets were on the back foot  for once.

But as the game wore on F.P. Vets regained their composure and played themselves out of trouble on many ocassions by virtue of some neat one-touch football. We had our chances as well  but it wasn't to be and F.P. Vets notched another four goals in the second half.  Our situation wasn't helped by George, who was  stalwart at right back, having to retire injured and then a bad case of cramp for Nick saw him on the bench for the last 15 minutes so there really was no way back for us.

A 'well played' award for Fausto who donned the Goalie jersey that nobody else wanted for the entire match and gave it his best shot.  All in all a good game of footie played in the best of spirits and as the final whistle was blown our day was brightend by the late arrival of the ever lovely Mrs Madisson who consoled us with a few kind words.
