| PRELIMARY SITE WORKS - the shallow void This page shows a before and after view of the preliminary quarry works. The 1st picture on the left was taken in August 2002 and shows the current condition of the site. The 2nd picture and shows the original condition of the pond in the shallow void and the main void. The water level was then 64aod in both areas of the shallow void. The quarry water has been pumped to the canal down to 52 aod. In the 1st picture you can see Century Park staff working by the water to prepare a 40 metre wide foundation layer for the earth retaining wall. The 3rd picture shows work in progress on the pond. 10,000 cu m of unsuitable material was excavated from the quarry void with long reach diggers and placed in the main void to reach the lowest level of the rock quarry floor at 56 aod. 7,500 cu m of rock was then placed in the bottom of the shallow void pond to a depth of 5 metres to 62 aod in 500m layers. 75,000 cu m of infill material was then excavated from the front of the quarry and placed in layers 0.25m deep and rolled to bring the level to 72aod. Testing for water content and compaction is carried out at regular intervals by Wardell Armstrong and Ground Investigation and Piling. You can see a layer being sampled in the picture above. Wardells have a resident engineer on site in September when we will be bringing the level in the shallow void upto 76aod. From October we will be allowed to begin the main earthmoving exercise. Material will be pushed into the shallow void and used to bring the retaining wall up initally from the 56aod to the 80aod level. Then in a second phase infilling and wall building will proceed in tandem to the 92aod level by the quarry lake and 95aod level by the canalside. |
