Dave Twitchell

Dave Twichell left Midland at the end of his junior year for a year in France followed by a second senior year at Thacher. Following high school I returned to my New England roots where I have been ever since. I attended Middlebury College where I fell in love with a girl who has been my wife for the past 29 years, and I fell in love with geology, which has been my career since graduating from college.

Work has been good to me. My first job was 7 months at sea on one of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution research ships. This was followed by graduate work in Oceanography at the Univ. of Rhode Island, and a career with the US Geological Survey in Woods Hole, MA. Marine geology has taken me to areas around the US as well as to England, Italy, and Brazil. This past year Nancy and I spent 8 months near Las Vegas, NV while I worked with geologists at UNLV mapping sediment in Lake Mead. The work has been varied, exciting, and challenging, and I consider myself remarkably lucky.

Nancy and I were married about a month after I returned from 7 months at sea which certainly turned a lot of heads. But kids didn’t become a part of our life for another 6 years. Sarah graduates from college this coming weekend, and Nate has finished his freshman year in college. I am not sure where the time went, but it has been a great ride. When not being outwitted by our children, Nancy continues to transform our yard into a beautiful garden while I must be a frustrated carpenter and spend my spare time building boats.

I returned to Midland once with Nancy, and as we left she commented, “Now I know where your personality came from.” Among other things, I learned self-reliance and how to write while I was there. Both have stood me in good stead ever since.
