Childhood Memory
I put my shoes on, head out the door and down the street like every other day. It’s really nice outside because it’s around 1:30 when the sun is out and the day is at its highest temperature. I turn the corner to the back of the house because Chris’ lives on the top of the house and I head up his stairs. I enter the door and yell out his name, his mom never ever minds that I’m over most of the time. “Chris.” “Yea I’m right here.” I walk over and we slap hands and try to figure out what we want to do. Immediately we both come up with go outside bike riding. I don’t know why we even asked each other, I mean cause we both knew what we wanted to do.
Chris heads out of his room. “Alright let me got get my bike from the garage and then we’ll head down to your house to go get yours.” So I follow and we get his bike and Chris rides ahead to my house about half way down the street, but stops halfway so I can catch up walking. We reach my house and I go to the back. “You wanna come or no.” “Nah I’ll just wait out front for you.” I go back to go get my bike and don’t bother to take any of my safety gear. I mean I know I should take it, but putting it on and having it on is such a hassle and pain in the butt. I go out front and get on my bike. Chris gets on his. “You ready to go.” “Yep, so where do you want to go?” “I don’t know lets just ride around first and then we’ll figure out what we should do next.” “Why do you ask stupid questions like that” “How is asking you were to go stupid.” Chris says, “Because you always ask the same question we go and you always know the answer.” I go whatever to myself and we head off on our bikes.
We ride around the huge parking lot that is right across my house and we have races around it to see who wins. We do this for about half an hour to an hour until we get bored. Chris finishes first like he always does. “Haha, you suck I always beat you.” “Its probably cause you go a crappy bike.” I look art him shaking my head. “No you moron, maybe it’s because you are a lot bigger than me and you have more endurance and strength. Dumbass.” “Shut up, stupid, let’s go do something else.” “Yea I guess, let’s go down the hill.” “Alright lets go.”
We head down the end of the street right before the dead end where the hill is. It always fun to go down the hill. You pick up so much speed. But you got to make sure that no cars are coming. So I head down first while Chris is at the bottom of the hill. He tells me when to go and when not to go. “Alright no cars go!” I back up a bit and starts peddling as fast as I can and rush down the hill at top speed. Man the rush is great. I absolutely love going fast. Speed is one thing that I enjoy the most. I guess that it’s so exhilarating and exciting. I go back up and come down again. “Woohooo,” I shout as I come down the hill again and again. Chris looks up, looking to day something. “Alright, it’s my turn now, come down now.” My turn is up and I head down the hill one more time as Chris comes up to hill and I wait at the bottom. “Are there any cars coming.” “No, go ahead.” Chris comes rushing down the hill at top speed as if he is riding a motorcycle or a dirt bike. Chris comes down the hill one more time and stops. “Alright this is getting boring now. What do you want to do now?”
I shrug my shoulders and think of what to do. Then a smile comes to my face because I am thinking of some new stunts we should do coming down the hill. “How about we can’t hold on to the handle as we come down the hill.” “Alright fine, but if you fall down and hurt yourself, done blame me for making you do anything, ok.” “Fine by me, let’s go.” So we start to go down the hill one at a time. Chris goes first and swerves al the way down the hill, but manages to get to the bottom. “Ha, your turn.” So I come down the hill and nearly lose balance, but reach the bottom of the hill before I lose complete balance. It’s so scary coming down that hill, not having complete control of the bike, but I would never show that to Chris. I don’t want to seem like a chicken. We go down the hill again and when I reach the bottom I decide to make this stunt even more dangerous.
“How about we come halfway down the hill without using our hands and then hop over the bike so we stand on one peddle of the bike and we are allowed to use our hands as we come down the rest of the hill.” Chris gives me a face that says he doesn’t understand. So I then demonstrate what I mean. At first he was very reluctant to do it because he knew as well as I that we would definitely fall off the bike and get hurt. He looks and goes “Alright fine, but you go first since it was your idea.” I think oh crap, but since I brought it up I guess I should go first. So I head up the hill and wait for him to given me a signal. “Alright, no cars.” So I come down the hill using no hands and then once I’m halfway there I hop over to the other side of my bike standing on the on pedal. Within 5 seconds I reach the bottle and my heart is pounding. Thank God that was over.
I was so ecstatic about my stunt that I perform a victory lap around this patch of grass that’s in the middle of the street. But as I complete the full circle around the grass, I go over some sand and my tire slips out from under and I fall off. I nail both my knees on the street and start bleeding. Man it hurt so much. I scream “O man that hurt, Ahh, my knee.” Chris runs over concerned, but laughing a bit. “O, shit, are you ok man?” “Yea I think so, but I nailed both my knees pretty bad and now they sting like a bitch. It hurts.” “Yo, you wanna go home now.” “No, it’s still your turn and you have to go. I went so you have to go too. We had a deal.” “Oh fine you cry baby.”
I siT on the sidewalk at the bottom of the hill as Chris climbs back up the hill with his bike. He comes down full speed no hands then switches over to the other side of the bike with no sweat. But then as he’s about to reach the bottom, his bike flips forward and he slams onto the street and skids like 5 feet. My reaction was holy shit. “Holy shit man, are you alright. Talk to me Chris, say something.” Chris lays on the ground moaning in pain. “O man that hurt. This was so stupid. Crap, I skinned my whole chest and stomach.” Chris was in obvious pain and was bleeding too. All I could think was man we are so freaking stupid. “Alright let’s get you home and just tell your mom you fell off. Alright?” “Yeah I know.” Like hell we’re going to tell his mom what really happened. “Just say you ran over some pothole ok.” “Man we are never going to do this crap again.” “Yeah, I know.”
We both head for his house and his mom was like what happened. Are you ok and all that stuff. She helps us clean up and we are sure to never ever do anything so stupid like that again. She knows something’s up, but she doesn’t bother to be detective. We only look to have fun, but end up getting hurt.
