The first troops to serve in Australia were four specially raised companies of the Marine Corps, which arrived with the First Fleet in 1788. In 1792 the Marine garrison was relieved by the New South Wales Corps which, between 1800 and 1810, was supported by local volunteer forces at Sydney and Parramatta, known as loyal Associations....

NSW Corps (Rum Corps) raised 1789 in Eng for NSW service.... In 1800 the quality of the Corps, now being augmented by replacements from England, changed for the worse as the demands of the Napoleonic wars made it difficult to secure officers and men of the original standard.  As a result they even started recruiting ex-convicts.... In 1809, the Botany Bay Rangers as they had been affectionately know in earlier times,  was renamed the 102nd Regiment of the Line.....
....The rank and file of the Corps were given the option of remaining in the colony by re-enlistment in the 73rd Regiment directly [which arr NSW Jan 1810], or by serving in the Veteran Corps which Macquarie formed from the long-service men of the former NSW Corps. Almost half the men of the Corps elected to remain. [detachments sent out to  Newcastle, Parramatta, Derwent, Norfolk Is., and Port Dalrymple]
....
There were a number of men from the 102nd Regt who volunteered to join the 73rd so they could stay in the Colony. With these volunteers the 73rd was brought up to  1000 rank and file.
