| DUESBERY | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Robert Duesbery was born about 1774 and died 1838. He was captain of the sea-going vessel "The Rover". His port was Scarborough, England. He was a good Christian man and conducted services each Sunday for the sailors on his ship. He often took trips that kept him away from home for two years at a time. He was married twice. His child by his first marriage was Robert Boseman Duesbery. His second wife's name was Alice Butler. His son, Robert Boseman Duesbery, who was the first mate on the sailing vessel "The Betsy" was away on a voyage and a severe storm arose and he was washed overboard and drowned. Robert was to have been put in charge of a vessel and made Captain on his next voyage. Oh this voyage, Robert had his seamans chest with him in which he kept his clothes. His chest was made in 1818 by Alice Butler's cousin, John Day. The home coming of this chest containing Robert's clothes was a sad thing for the family |

| A few years later when Capt Duesbery came to the age of sixty-four he took his last voyage. He decided to take a short trip of four months, known as a "back-end" voyage, then retire from active sailing service. He took Robert's chest instead of his own as his own chest was too large for a short voyage. During this voyage a very severe storm came up, washing him overboard and he was drowned. It was a great shock to his wife and her eleven year old daughter Eleanor, who went down to the pier to watch the Rover come home, to see the flag at half mast. It meant that some of the crew were drowned and when they asked and found that it was the Captain it was almost more than they could bear. So once again the chest came home full of loved one's clothing. This chest was dear to the heart of Alice Butler Duesbery and her daughter Eleanor. In 1850 when Eleanor sailed for Canada with her husband Robert Tompson, this chest came with her, and was in turn given to her daughter Eleanor. This chest is to be handed down to the generation of Eleanor Harriets and is in the possession of Eleanor Harriet Todd. There also are two round white china mottoes of great age which read, "I know that my Redeemer liveth" and "Prepare to meet thy God". They belonged to Alice Butler Duesbery and were brought to Canada in 1850 by her daughter Eleanor. These too, are to be handed down to the generations of Eleanor Harriets. |

| Alice Butler Duesbery was a good mother and a Christian woman. Letters written by this dear old lady to her daughter Eleanor are now in the possession of Eleanor H. Todd. They show a loneliness that she would never in this world meet her two beloved daughters, Eleanor H. Thompson and Mary Ann Akitt who both married in England but had come to Canada in 1850 to live. This dear old lady was very lady like in appearance, wore her hair parted in the center and three curls on each side of her face. She wore her morning cap and also had her dress cap. The letters show a woman well educated and a keen observer of human nature. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Thomas Thomson died at sea in 1832. Five years later his wife, Emma Harris, also died. Their sons, Sinclair and Thomas, were supposedly raised by an uncle who was a missionary on the Shetland Islands. Robert, born Feb 12, 1825, married Eleanor Harriet Duesbery in 1845 in Hull, England. The family eventually came to York, Canada, what is now Toronto. The sailing took 6 weeks. Robert Thomson changed the family name to Thompson to distinguish them from another Thomson family in their town. Mary Ann Thompson was born Feb 1, 1854 in Canada. She married Charles Sinclair Chissus April 18, 1879. |
