Frank Darabont's debut feature film (apart from a unknown film in 1983) is surprisingly powerful. Since Shawshank he has done no other directorial work. It is a tight film about friendship, survival, and hope in a maximum-security prison, about a condemned innocent man finding acceptance through his courage and openess. Based on the novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King.
However, the film simply doesn't seem to possess enough impact for a great,

film. The film held me in suspense, the directing pleased my senses, the acting was inspirational, but it just wasn't quite enough. I think just about every respectable review I've read of this film has given it half a star off full marks.
By the way, the movie goes through a period of over 20 years and nobody seems to age.
