Although I'm not convinced that Schaffner's later film, Papillon, is a great, Patton certainly is.
This is nitpicking, but I will report what I saw. I saw that some of the extras, when the camera closed in on their area, weren't very supportive of George C. Scott's brilliant acting display.
I saw this film on an indirect recommendation from 'Net Legend James Berardinelli. Patton is his favourite film (though he states he doesn't think it is the best). Even with such a strong backing, I didn't expect much when I started watching it. For the next 160 or so minutes I was totally engrossed in Schaffner's expert directing, Coppola's flawless screenplay, Scott's dazzling acting, and a brilliant support cast including Malden.
