Without a doubt manipulative - but done in style. It has already been mentioned that films like these are branches of Frank Capra's work. This is a biopic of a normal, fictitious person, more specifically a composer, who took up teaching to 'fall back' a little. The film is perhaps too episodic, having to introduce more and more diverse characters. However, that was done intentionally by writer Patrick Sheane Duncan (Courage Under Fire), for it is these characters who always do more than merely light up the screen. It is Capraesque because it is so uplifting - about life (It's a Wonderful Life), about love - that are so often part of Capra films.
