Expert directing by Robert Redford, based on the best seller by Nicholas Evans, but better. Redford had proved himself with the extraordinary Ordinary People, and films like Quiz Show and this further justifies his status as an exceptional director. I do not think I have seen a sequence better directed than the accident that occurs early in this movie.
Exploration of nature and its superiority in supporting healthy lives (body and soul) is not rare among films, but this is one of the best ones. While the beauty of the sunrises and sunsets inspire and tranquilise the troubled characters, they release their feelings into the wild, sensing their excessive anxiety and the insignificance of their petty worries.
I was truly shocked when I was informed of the pathetic ending of the book. The film definitely presents a much better conclusion.
