Director: Edward Zwick
Directing: Edward Zwick is still very much an unknown, despite this and Courage Under Fire. The powerful six minutes near the beginning of the picture probably provided some inspiration for the brutal scenes in Saving Private Ryan. The film on the whole was probably a basis for a sizeable portion of Gettysburg. Then there is the brilliant scene where Broderick is getting his neck treated. However, some of the bombing sequences weren't perfect.
Acting: A surprisingly good performance from Matthew Broderick, although he fell off a bit towards the end. Cary Elwes was also a surprise. Though he did not have much of a role, he did considerably better than in The Princess Bride (where unfortunately the two acting flaws were in the two main characters) and Twister. Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman provide brilliances that have become their trademarks.
Writing: Very well written dialogue all through.
