| This devotion to Our Sorrowful Mother was originated in the thirteenth century. It recalls the Sorrows of the Virgin Mother of God endured in compassion for the suffering and death of her Divine Son. |
| The Rosary of the Seven Sorrows consists of seven groups of seven beads with three additional beads and a crucifix. The seven groups of one Our Father and seven Hail Marys are recited in remembrance of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, namely: 1. The Prophecy of Semeon who told our Sorrowful Mother of the bitter passion and death of Jesus. 2. The flight into Egypt - Our Sorrowful Mother is forced to flee into Egypt to save her beloved Son from the death decreed by Herod. 3. The lossof Child Jesus in the temple - Our Sorrowful Mother is separated from the Child Jesus for three long days while He is lost in Jerusalem. 4. Mary meets Jesus carrying His cross Our Sorrowful Mother meets Jesus on the road to Calvary and sees Him fall under the cruel weight of the cross. 5. The Crucifixion Our Sorrowful Mother watches Jesus die on the cross. 6. Mary receives the body of Jesus from the cross Our Sorrowful Mother receives the dead body of Jesus in her arms. 7. The body of Jesus is placed in the tomb. Our Sorrowful Mother sees Jesus placed in the sacred tomb. Three Hail Marys are said in remembrance of the tears mary shed becuase of the suffering of her Divine Son. These are said to obtain true sorrorw for our sins. Following is the concluding prayer: V. Pray for us, O most sorrowful Virgin Mary. R. That we be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us Pray. Lord Jesus, we now implore both for the present and for the hour of our death, the intercession of the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Thy Mother who was pierced at the time of Thy passion with a sword of grief. Grant us this favour, O Savior of the World who livest and reignest with Thy Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen |
