Bear bell in hand, bear
spray holster at the hip... ready for a gentle stroll in
Kluane National Park, Yukon territory - BEAR COUNTRY. Not everyone is convinced about the value of this kind of bear
equipment. The theory behind the bell is that bears often attack out
of fear: if the bear hears you coming, it SHOULD move out of the way. However
some people disagree with the theory, and prefer to call this piece
of equipment a "dinner bell"... Bear spray sometimes works - a Kluane
ranger told us his spray saved his life. But once again there
are differences of opinion: if you give an angry bear a face full of pepper and
it DOESN'T run away, it's likely to even angrier than before...
