| ONEILL
Surname History This name is one of the most prominent in all Ireland, being in the top ten in Antrim, Derry and Tyrone. Comprising of many branches and long associated with regal power, the Tyrone line is descended from Niall Ruadh (Red Niall), brother of Aodh Dubh (Black Hugh) the latter being a King of Ulster in the fourteenth century. As the Heads of the main septs or clans in Ulster ONeill chieftains exerted great authority in the north part of Ireland for over four centuries, managing by a combination of force, charm and intrigue to command the allegiance or subservience of the other septs or clans. Within the territory of Tyrone (which was much bigger then than it is now) there was intense rivalry among fellow O'Neill's and even in the time of Hugh as O'Neill Morr and Earl of Tyrone there were who would have supplanted him had they been able to. Hugh ONeill was the last chief to be inaugurated, and following the English victory in 1603 the English general Mountjoy destroyed the ONeill coronation chair at Tullaghoge. Since then many O'Neill's have been prominent as soldiers and statesmen, often in Europe where Hugh ended his days. The present bearer of the title O'Neill MOR is Don Carlos ONeill of Seville, a Spanish nobleman who is also the 12th Marques de La Granja, 5th Marques Del Norte and Conde de Benagiar. In the summer of 1991 he was guest of honour at varies ceremonies in Tyrone to commemorate the clan. |
