In 1976 I past my radio amateur's exam, allowing me to take out a class B license for the callsign G8OIH

I joined the Royal Naval Amateur Radio Society (membership number 958) during 1975; then being a Short Wave Listener.
On HMS Belfast I assisted in using the original Discone (at the very top of the mainmast) for our VHF (144/145 MHz) equipment.  One other Discone was connected to what was then the Ship Keeper's Mess television - picture was great at high tide.

Being a class B license I enjoyed working VHF using Single Side Band - it travelled further.
