WELLINGTON, WELLINGTON REGION
wellington is the capitol of new zealand,
but we were really only there because it is the depot
where you take the ferry over to the south island.
there are 2 different ferries, both incredibly expensive
(it cost $230 for sam, paul, i, and the toyota camry to get over):
the Lynx (takes one hour to cross) and the Interislander (takes 3 hours to cross).
we took the cheaper of the expensive options,
which meant 3 hours on a bumpy boat ride.

while in wellington, we stayed at a hostel called the Beethoven House,
renowned for its owner who blasts classical music every morning
to wake everyone up and continues playing it throughout the day.
this was the first hostel ever built in wellington, and the third ever in new zealand.
the eccentric owner was on vacation when we arrived, so we were spared,
but we were a little disappointed that we didn't get to experience the Beethoven in its entirety.
we did score staying in a little cottage in the backyard though,
so it was just the 5 of us in our little private bungalow.
However, there was a lack of heat
(paul is allergic to dust and the space heater was blowing it all over),
so we decided to throw all the mattresses on the floor
and sleep as a big 5-some.
it was very uncomfortable.

a place i didn't get to go to in wellington because paul and i were doing laundry
(but sam, sula, and suzi went), was the innovative  Te Papa Museum,
which houses an excellent description of  the history and culture of new zealand.
it is supposed to be the best museum in the whole country.
