AUCKLAND, AUCKLAND REGION
i flew into auckland, new zealand's biggest city.
1.2 million people (the whole country only has 3.88 million people).
auckland really wasn't that impressive,
and my main concern in auckland was how to get out.
i didn't come to new zealand to check out it's big city glamour
(it has big city glamour?)
i didn't spend very much time here, but i spent enough.

The Auckland War Memorial Museum
had a really great exhibit on all the introduced species to new zealand.
new zealand apparently has NO native mammals
(ok, well, maybe one, a bat),
so everyone it has now is introduced.
The museum also has a resident Maori cultural group called Manaia
that performs shows daily - introducing suspecting tourists to poi (balls on the end of a string) dances
and the haka (a traditional war dance
most widely known because New Zealand's rugby team, The All-Blacks,
perform it before every match).
The museum is in the middle of Auckland's big city park,
The Auckland Domain.

i also headed over to Mt. Eden,
an old volcanic crater that offers spectacular views of the city.
