i had booked a flight from darwin to brisbane,
so i had to get myself up to the Northern Territory by 24 June.
The most reliable way to do this was to take an organized backpacker
tour bus,
Easyrider,
where i was guaranteed to get up there in 11 days.
Even though the bus was packed,
it was only me and a scottish girl, Viv,
who would brave the entire journey to Darwin in one shot
(most people jump off at different places to spend a few nights,
but we both just didn't have the time).
Basically, we spent half the day driving
and half the day doing stuff - hiking, snorkeling, visiting national
parks, etc.
it really drove home the message that most of australia
is vast, red-dirted, wide open space with very few people.
It was just so much overstimulation of beautiful places
that by the end you couldn't even appreciate each one individually
anymore.
SO many beautiful sunsets, SO many beautiful gorges.
We stopped and saw:
*the Pinnacles Desert
*Natures Window, The Loop, and The
Z-Bend Gorge
*Hamelin Pool to see the stromatolites
-
rock formations that only currently
exist in Australia and the Bahamas;
made by some of the simplest/oldest
bacteria on the planet
*Monkey Mia to wade in the water with wild
dolphins
*Shell Beach where the sand is just millions
of cockle shells
*Ningaloo Reef at Turquoise Bay
*The Stairway to the Moon in Broome
*Geikie Gorge
*The Bungle Bungles in the Kimberly
*Lake Argyle
*Litchfield N.P.
*giant termite mounds built by millions
of ant-sized termites
