| About Mickey Rooney: Mickey was born on September 23rd, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York. His birth name is Joe Yule Jr. and he began entertaining when he was 15 months old in his families Vaudeville act. In 1932 he had his name legally changed to Mickey Rooney. He attended Mrs. Lawlor's School for Professional Children where he met fellow Vaudevillain Judy Garland. They became good friends and their friendship continued till her death in June 1969. They were in many films together from 1937 to 1958. In 1934 he was signed to MGM studios. He was nominated for an Oscar 1939 for the movie Babes in Arms . The Academy gave him an honorary Oscar in 1938 for "significant contribution in bringing to the screen the spirit and personification of youth, and ... setting a high standard of ability and achievement." He recieved his second Oscar nomination in 1943 for his role in The Human Comedy and 1944's National Velvet earned him another Oscar nomination.In 1983 he received a Lifetime Achievment Award Oscar.
