Philosophy of Writing
The concept of communication begins with the understanding that communication means effectively reaching a high level of comprehension of written and verbal information. Communication is the meaning of messages for the purpose of all occurrences in the relationship, which leaves little room for assumption. Communication is essential to have in order to develop a healthy relationship between the teacher, student, and parent.
In order to ensure outstanding communication, one must be an effective writer. Writing is an important skill to have. It allows students to express themselves freely and to their full potential. It is an effective way to affect the way children speak, understand, analyze, and process information. An effective writer dreams, has courage, has discipline, reads, and is a continuous learner. In dreaming, the writer brainstorms and creatively expresses ideas. An effective writer constantly writes, and does not neglect to reach his/her fullest writing potential. Once an effective writer brainstorms new ideas, he/she must have enough courage to share new ideas and to expose himself/herself to criticisms. Once the effective writer gathers criticism he/she shows discipline by taking those criticisms and revising to make better his/her writing. In order to do this, the effective writer must read and continuously learn new ways to develop as an effective writer.
In order to teach students to write and communicate effectively, the teacher must ensure that the students know the basics of writing. Once the student knows the basics, the best way to develop an understanding is to constantly practice. Practice can come in the form of writing assignments that allow for real life application and involvement. Students can write about current issues, do literature reviews, or explorations in Science and History. The writing assignments assigned should encourage students to think outside of the box, and to develop the idea that there is no box. Teachers who encourage students to write effectively must be effective writers themselves. It is important for the teacher to lead by example through effectively writing letters to parents and students, writing effective lesson plans, and demonstrating skill through the writing of assignments given to students.
The standard for communication should be the same throughout the school. In order to demonstrate the importance of being a good communicator and an effective writer, each teacher must enforce writing to all students in every classroom. If the standards are the same in every classroom, every child has the same opportunity to become effective writers and communicators. As a way to assess the children in the school, schools should promote school-wide activities geared towards communication and writing. If all students are encouraged to participate, then each of the students has opportunity after opportunity to practice and perfect their skill. Through practice and consistency, students are able to write and communicate effectively.
