Philosophy of Education |

A philosophy of education is the set of beliefs, ideas, and expectations a teacher has about the learning process. To begin, the purpose of education is to show students new ways of viewing the world around them and to give students the tools to be a functioning member of society. The ultimate goal of education is to enable students to become independent learners. It is the duty of the teacher to ensure that the student succeeds in the classroom, and to ensure that the student succeeds outside of the classroom as well. The teacher's number one task is to make sure that their students grab every concept, and this should be done by any means necessary. |

I believe that students have a right to a quality education and that their teachers should be engaged in the learning process as well. Before a teacher can expect the best from their students, they themselves must be prepared to meet the demands of a changing society and be their academic best. Becoming the best requires a teacher to always find ways to sharpen their craft and implement these changes with the ultimate goal of meeting the needs of the students that they teach. I believe incorporating Dunn & Dunn's Learning Styles, Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, Johnson & Johnson's Cooperative Learning, and John Dewey's Problem Based Learning are effective tools to teach and reach children. Teachers should provide a physically safe, non-prejudicial, and visually stimulating environment. In other words, a teacher should incorporate effective classroom management strategies that range from Harry Wong's First Day of School to Lee Canter's Assertive Discipline. Lastly, I believe that a teacher's responsibility is to work as partner with parents in the education of their children. I have also realized over the years that there are some things that are out of my parameter of control and that I must focus on those things that are within my locus of control. Part of this locus of control includes my attempt to get parents involved in the academic life of their children. |

I believe that the learner has a responsibility of bringing their best to school. I believe that students should take advantage of opportunities presented to them and to make the best of their academic day. Students are to be given opportunities to practice critical thinking and that every child should not only have access to computer technology, but be able to use this technology in various situations. Ultimately, students should evolve into individuals who look around their local community and question what they can do to improve it. |
