Saishi Tenshi is the unwilling hero of the story. After saving Rei's afterlife, he becomes thrown into a battle between the Kodamabatsu and the demon Tenma. The only way he can free himself and keep his father safe is to help Rei in her fight. Tenshi is usually meek in the face of obstacles but when given the right incentive, proves himself to be more than a match for anything that comes his way.

Kodama Rei is the heroine of the story. She was the last of the Kodamabatsu clan before she died as a result of a surprise Hell Hound attack. She set out from her home in northern Japan to find and destroy the demon Tenma in revenge for the near-destruction of her clan. With Tenshi's help, she's able to continue her fight from beyond the grave. Outside of battle, she is kind and curious about Tenshi and his life. In a fight, she becomes serious and devoted to winning.

He is very laidback with a tendency to sleep although he is a straight-A student and skilled in fighting. Neither of his talents are shown, seeing as how they "take too much effort".
