I'm sorry for the spotty blogging, but I've been a bit overwhelmed offline and had to take a break. Hopefully I'm back ... I have a lot of catching up with to do with my online buddies, can't wait to see what they've been up to, and to get updates on their progress.
I can't believe that there's just 95 days left until L's wedding. I'm starting to freak out. *L* Ugh. The dress she picked out for me to wear is so pretty and beautiful, and so not meant to be worn by a fat person. I'm seriously having doubts about this whole thing. I'll try to find a picture on the internet and post it so you guys can see what I'm talking about.
I purposely haven't had a formal picture taken of me since 2001 because I'm fat, and I don't want to look at myself (hence the absence of full-length mirrors in my house), but with a professional photographer at the wedding, I don't think I can get away with not having my picture taken.
Did you watch Joan of Arcadia last week? Well, Hilary Duff was on the show, and she faked being rescued by Joan in order to fit in with the popular girls, who dumped her once they found out her mom worked at a restaurant. At the end of the show, Hilary's standing in front of the desserts in the school cafeteria and can't make up her mind which dessert to choose. She confides in Joan that she doesn't know who she is, what she likes. All her life she's been on one side of the fence or the other, liking and doing and being what she thought others wanted her to be. Standing in front of those desserts was a defining moment for her because she realized she didn't know what she herself liked. So Joan has her take one of each of the desserts, and the show closes with Hilary sampling each of the desserts.
I brought this up, because I was exactly like Hilary Duff, up to October of 2004. Seriously. For 30 years, I was whatever I thought someone else wanted me to be - likes, dislikes, favorite bands, clothes, everything. I think it's one of the reasons why I like just about anything - because I would change myself just to have someone like me or to fit in. The sad thing is that this just wasn't in high school, but into my adult life. I didn't have a defining moment like Hilary did, I'm not sure what was it that finally brought me to my senses, but I'm not like that anymore.
It gets really tiring trying to be something that you aren't, and to basically, live a lie. It's hard trying to remember what you're supposed to be like. Watching that Joan brought it all back for me.
So ... what I'm trying to get at is that as worried as I am about the wedding, I'm not going to resort to a fancy diet or OTC diet pills, like I would have in the past. I'm gonna put that dress on, and when the photographer comes my way, I'm gonna smile! Because this is me. Someday down the road, I'll look at that picture and tell someone, this is me, on May 7, 2005. That picture doesn't have to be the forever me.

Whew, feeling a little better today, but genius that I am, I went and got my flu shot this morning, so I may be icky again later this week.
I also signed up for my very first 5K run -- the 1st Annual St. Patrick's Parade 5K Run, aka the Shamrock 5K Run. I've never run before, period. So this'll be interesting *LOL* I'm doing it with Mary, one of my co-workers, who has been very supportive of my weight loss journey, and walks with me at lunch. We're gonna see if we can buy shirts with our company's new logo on it, and wear it during the run. I've been walking with Mary, she keeps a faster pace than Keitha, and she's willing to walk longer distances than Keitha. Which is what I really want. We're planning to walk most of the 5K, as this is my first, but it'll be a good trial run, as there are 2 - 3 more we'd like to do this summer.
Have you run a 5K (or more) before? What was your first one like? Any tips or suggestions for this overweight newbie?? *L*

I'm back after a 2-day break from blogging. You can see what kept me busy on my other site. I also didn't post anything here because I got extrememly off diet *LOL* Man, when I fall, I fall hard!
It really wasn't that bad, though. Thursday was Trudy's birthday, and she brought in lemon bars, pecan squares, and these chocolate peanut butter squares. I ate 3 of each -- not all at once! Spread out throughout the day. And Kelly took me to lunch at mo's cucina too, which was really nice of her. I did control myself and had spaghetti and meatballs (perfectly portioned), a small side salad, and a diet coke with lime. I didn't walk on Friday or Thursday either.
I'm back on track though, and have scheduled a doctor's appointment on Tuesday. I want her to put me on a meal plan. The last time I saw her, she gave me a couple of brochures for a couple of different meal plans, and I found them as I was cleaning last night. I've decided on Solutions for Wellness, which was one of her personal picks. The sample menu was similar to what I've been eating the past two weeks, but some of the recipes look awesome, and I could definitely use the variety!

Today was similar to yesterday, but I added some tuna to my evening meal. Gotta have some variety, right?
I'm sure by now that you've all read the Dietary Guidlines for Americans 2005, in which it states Americans should exercise 30 - 90 minutes per day? Well, don't feel too bad if you don't, even US Secretary of Health Tommy Thompson (currently stepping down) admits he doesn't exercise a minimum of 30 minutes a day. However, he does 150 push-ups a day instead. (Read the 25th paragraph of the article). So, I say we're doing pretty darn good! :)

I don't know if this is real, but I heard it on the radio on my drive to work this morning.
We've all followed one sometime during our lives. Which ones have you done, and which are the hardest/weirdest/easiest to follow?
For me, the one I did enjoy, was the Cabbage Soup diet. Man, that soup is delicious!! :) The only diet I've been able to follow successfully is the "Common Sense Diet" *L*
P.S. I didn't post yesterday because I was feeling extremely lazy *L* But I did weigh-in and lost 0.5 lbs. Yaay me!

Not too long ago, just a few weeks as a matter of fact, food was my purpose in life. I loved to eat. Food was my cure-all ... feeling happy? Celebrate with ice cream. Depressed? Cheer up with some chips and salsa. Angry? Eat anything crunchy. Bored? Eat anything that my hand comes in contact with in in the fridge/cupboards. I used to joke that if eating didn't cure whatever was ailing me, call 911, quick! Something's seriously wrong! *L*
With the help of my self-hypnosis, I've finally broken the hold that food has over me. I've had a major issue to deal with today, and now that the day's done, I realize that I haven't eaten anything all day. Not even a Slim Fast Optima. When I would normally have sat in depression or anxiety on the couch with a bag of chips and jar of salsa, I took a walk instead. I also meditated, and prayed. I know that while not reaching for food everytime I have a crisis isn't good, not eating all together isn't good either. This'll be something I'll try to work on, but I'm not overly worried about it.
Today in review:
Throughout the day Lots of H2O, Arizona Green Tea, and OJ, but no food.

Just a quick post today, just got home from a date with my son :) It was another crazy, hoppin' day at work, and I literally didn't have enough time in the afternoon to eat. Then there was tons of traffic on the way home, and I had to pick up the babysitter for Meghan, and did the drive-thru at Culver's for dinner for the kids. I didn't get anything for myself, I figured it was better to skip dinner than to eat a 1,000 calorie butterburger basket meal.

When I gave Meghan a hug this morning as I dropped her off at preschool, she ran her hand along my back and said, "So bumpy, mama" Man, that sucks. Of course she didn't mean anything by it, but her comment reinforced my desire to continue my journey to lose weight and get healthy. I want to be a positive role model for her, and I want to live a stronger, longer life with her!!
I walked by myself again today, Keitha and Trudy ran errands on their lunch break, Kelly says she's busy the rest of the week, and Mary's on vacation 'til Monday. I did 3 laps inside today. I gave myself lots of variety -- on one end if I wwalked down the escalator, I'd walk up the stairs at the other end, and vice versa. And I didn't "ride" the escalator, I walked up/down. Tomorrow's supposed to be very cold (high of 11) and ice-y, so I'll probably walk inside again.
I'm not happy with my eating this week, but it's definitely better than last week. Next week will be even better because Martha's been giving me lots of awesome advice and suggestions.
On the other hand, I'm very happy with my walking. This is my second work-week in a row that I've walked every day. I'm going to add a cardio DVD twice a week in addition to my walking next week. If I can do more, I will, but I don't want to burn out or injure myself.
Today was a little harder to eat my meals because it was the busiest day I've had at the Bureau. I was fortunate to be able to take my walk and eat lunch afterwards.

Keitha and Trudy didn't want to walk today, Mary's on vacation, and Kelly's in Madison for a meeting, and we have a thunderstorm on the way as well as a flood warning, so I decided to take my walk indoors.
Our building is connected to several others via skywalks, and I was told that from one end to the other and back was 3.5 miles. I borrowed Keitha's pedometer because I was curious to see if it was true. At the end of one lap, I recorded just .22 miles. So I kept walking, and walking, and walking, and 45 minutes and 5,716 steps later, the pedometer recorded 1.08 miles walked.
I knew that wasn't right, so after a delicious lunch, I hopped on the internet and visited The Walking Site and discovered that one mile equals just over 2,000 steps. *L* So I figured I walked about 2.5 miles. [A quick note, the laps I walked was just through 2 of the 5 skywalks, as the third door to the convention center was closed.] I think Keitha's pedometer is set to her stride length, and I do have a shorter stride, so that may be the problem. I'm going to stop at WalMart on the way home and pick up my own pedometer.
I have officially decided to join Train to End Stroke and raise funds for the American Heart Association. Heart disease is prevalent in my family - my paternal grandfather died from a heart attack, my paternal grandmother died from a stroke, and my dad died from a heart attack, but also had a stroke 4 years prior to his heart attack. My mom also had a stroke 2 years ago. My maternal grandmother died from a stroke related to diabetes. This is something really dear to my heart, and to run in the memory of my grandpa, grandmothers, and dad, and in honor of my mom, is almost too wonderful!
Wisconsin does not have a local Train to End Stroke chapter, so I'll have to go to Chicago for an informational meeting and occaisional training sessions. I can take the M-train on the weekends for $5, so we'll see how that goes. I can always chat with my trainer online and on the telephone, too. :)
I would also like to invite all my female readers to visit this website. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association's national call for women to take charge of their heart health, and live longer, stronger lives. They have great information, tips, and suggestions for women on making healthier choices and living a healthier lifestyle.
I know, I tend to get carried away with these things ... first The President's Challenge, then Train to End Stroke, and now Go Red for Women. It just goes to show you how many organizations there are that want to help you get healthy!! To not take advantage of them would be a shame!

Well, I've done it this time *L* What started out as just lil' ol' me walking on my lunch break has turned into a group thing. Noooo, not that kind of group thing :) Keitha, Mary, Trudy, and Kelly now walk with me at lunch, which is really nice, because I have a variety of people to walk with. No offense to Keitha, but she isn't very flexible about walking times and distances. At least now, she'll have someone to walk with if I want to go later or longer. I jokingly said we should have t-shirts made up, but that idea took off like a rocket - Mary's going to ask her sons (both accomplished artists) to create a logo and design for our very own t-shirts. Pretty cool, eh?
I also went to TJ Maxx and bought 2 lbs wrist weights -- you know, the ones that slip onto your wrists, that are filled with sand, or something? I figure this will help me add a bit more cardio to the walk.
Not one to sit on the sidelines, I've also requested information from Joints In Motion and Team in Training. Kelly just returned from a Team in Training marathon in Arizona, and she's got me all hyped up about training for a half-marathon. That would be pretty cool! Okay, okay, yes, I am crazy. But still, training and running for a good cause will motivate me even more! I've always been the type of person that will do more for others than herself. So by training and running for a cause, I'm tricking myself to take care of myself at the same time.
Okay, here's a thought/question for you -- why do I feel hungrier today, when I had smaller meals spread throughout the day, than I do when I eat just one meal a day? At certain points during the day, I was almost ravenous! I do realize that certain foods will keep me satisfied and fuller for longer periods of time. And if that's the main reason, then what kinds of foods are "good" for me? I also noticed that I still need to add more protein to my day ...

I'm going to try have my final meal of the day at least 3 hours before bedtime. It'll be hard because I do like to go to bed early (by 9p), but don't get home until 6p, so I may not always make the three hour mark ...

Hehehe, it's actually like Day 1 of the 2nd time I'm starting the Plan, but what the heck, eh? It's not like I've been bingeing or anything, so I'm not worried.
I've been reading Weight Loss blogs all morning, and am getting very inspired and motivated! Some of my favorite reads are Martha's, Skwigg's, and LibrarianOnTheLoose. I do have a blogroll of my favorite daily reads to your lower left ...
Bringing my food to work really helped. And I took my 1.5 mile walk at lunch - I've been able to walk faster, and was able to do complete my walk in 20 minutes! That's very encouraging, when I first started walking, it'd take me 30 minutes to walk to the lake and back.
The walk is great, but I need to add more cardio. I have Billy Blanks Tae Bo Cardio Workout DVD, and GAIAM Pilates Conditioning for Weigh Loss DVD at home. I have a ton of VHS tapes, but the VCR is in Nick's room, so I can't use them anymore. I should try to sell them or something. Want one? *L* But anyway, I know that I need to kick it up a notch. I'm actually looking forward to going home and working out *L* I guess you can tell I really want it this time! :)
so ... this is what I've eaten for the day:
8:30 am :: 1 c. fruit cocktail (canned, Lite, but rinsed off with water) and 1 c. low-fat cottage cheese
sometime in between :: 12 oz. Crystal Light Lemonade
2 pm :: 1 c. tossed greens, celery, carrots, and grape tomatoes. 12 oz. Crystal Light Sugar Free Iced Tea
I know it's not the best, but for someone that usually eats one meal a day, this is pretty good! I know that I'm missing protein, I'm gonna have to work on that tomorrow ... I hope to get one more salad/fruit in before the end of the work day, and another meal this evening at home after the scouts meeting.
Forgot to mention that I weighed in today, and am 2 lbs lighter! Yaay me!!

*sigh* Today was a busy day. I did the week's shopping for fresh fruits and veggies -- anyone that says eating healthy is expensive is wrong. I spent $54, and my cart was FULL! I bought greens, oranges, apples, grapes, cucumbers, carrots, celery, broccoli ... I can't even remember *L*
I'm bringing a package of greens, a cucumber, a container of carrots and celery, a tub of cottage cheese, and some other stuff I can't remember to work with me tomorrow. We have a full-size kitchen at work, so I figure rather than packing a lunch each evening for the following day, I'll bring enough on Monday for the entire week, and not have to worry about it. I also bought two cases of Slim Fast Optima, they're only 3 points each, and are good in a pinch.
I think I'm pretty much following the Weight Watcher points program, minus the weekly meetings. I found my Point Finder, and I bought The Complete Book of Food Counts. What a great read! *LOL* When I joined WW a year ago, I was to follow 22 - 27 points a day. I think I'm slightly heavier now, but I'm still aiming for the same point range, mostly the lower end though.
I'm obsessed with finding out the point value of EVERYTHING. *L* I was very happy to find that my favorite Arizona Green Tea with Honey has just 1 point a serving. Yumm!! Of course, figuring out the point value of fast foods has me swearing them off for life!
I did manage to log in a couple more activity points for The President's Challenge. If you haven't signed up yet, be sure to click here to find out more!

First, let me say that I did not vote for George W. Bush in the 2004 Presidential Election. I didn't vote for John Kerry, either. I didn't vote for anyone actually ... BUT!
Whether you voted for Dubya or not, I would like to challenge you to sign up for The President's Challenge.
The Challenge is easy ... just commit to doing some sort of exercise 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week ... and you can earn a presidential award! Waaaay cool!

Egads, three days without an entry! I'm sorry! With the first snow storm of the season, things got a little busy 'round here.
I'm still wishy-washy about which eating plan to follow. I know, I know, I need to make up my mind and stop wasting time! Don't worry, though, I've been eating sensibly all this time, so it's not like I've been following the "see food" diet :) [FYI, most likely, I'll be following Weight Watchers.]
I didn't weigh myself this week, it's that time of the month, and rather than beat myself up over weight gain, of which most could be attributed to bloating, I've decided to skip weigh-in the week of my cycle.
My friend Todd has now lost 90 lbs, credited to an eating plan and daily exercise. He followed the Atkins diet for the first 75 lbs, and is now following a caloric plan (I forgot to ask him how many calories he allows per day). One thing Todd mentioned -- daily exercise is a MUST! And it can't be a sunday walk in the park, you have to get moving, get that heart beating, and sweat! He's so awesome, he's my new inspiration. :)

I'm on a roll! I walked 1.5 miles today at lunch (I walked yesterday too). It was pretty cold out there, the Weather Channel said it was "29 degrees, but feels like 20 degrees". At least there wasn't any wind, usually the closer I get to Lake Michigan, the windier it gets. I also brought my snowboots today, which made the walk MUCH easier. Yesterday, I almost fell flat on my bum several times. That would've been quite a sight - me on my bum on Wisconsin Avenue. Ha!
Good news! We may actually have a Weight Watchers at Work thingy happening. The bureau has had it in the past, and several co-workers have expressed interest in starting it up again. That would be pretty cool!

I made 3 boxes of sugar free jello - peach, lime, and black cherry :) I also pre-made 5 salads - mixed greens, baby spinach, grape tomatoes, and celery. I also measured out 5 little containers of unsalted sliced almonds for my salad.
I'm preparing for battle, folks. The Battle of the Bulge. *L*
I can't wait to go to work tomorrow, so I can take my 1.5 mile walk at lunch *L* I also can't wait until the 15th, because I'm finally joining the YMCA. We have one 5 minutes from home, and another 5 minutes from work. The kids have been begging me to join, ever since our tour last week. It's just a wonderful place for us to spend time together, and get healthy!
I'm off to bed early, the kids are starting at a new child care center tomorrow (preschool for Meghan, before & after school care for Nick), so we all need to get a good nite's rest. I made a new bedtime of 9pm at the latest, I read that kids need at least 10 - 11 hours of sleep. Meghan lucks out because she still takes a 2 hour nap each day, but Nick needs his rest. They really should go to bed by 8, but there's just not enough time when I get home from work to get everything done by 8p.

Happy New Year everyone! My new years resolutions do not include losing weight. I resolve to eat healthier and exercise more!
I do have two "dates" that I am working towards - L's wedding on May 7th (I'm a bridesmaid) and hopefully, my vacation in Hawaii over Christmas 2005 and New Years 2006. Lord, what I would give to get off that plane 75 lbs lighter --- and skinnier than my older sister! Ha!!
I went through my old Shape, Fitness, and Self magazines, and tore out pages of workouts that interested me. I also tore out those before and after success stories, just the ones that really inspired me. I put them all in sheet protectors and put them in a big binder, which is on my dresser. I also put a large bulletin board on my bedroom wall, and pinned a few of the workouts I'm going to try, as well as two success stories for motivation. I figure I'll rotate them when I get bored or need a boost. I also completely re-arranged my bedroom to make room for working out.
I'm getting everything in place to help me succeed. I've stocked my cabinets with healthy foods, and gotten rid of 95% of the junk food. I've made little snack packs of baby carrots, celery, and sugar free jello. I read once, I think in Body for Life, that if you fail to plan, then plan on failing. 2005 is my year to shine!
