I-85 has three Business Loops, in Spartanburg, SC and also from Lexington to Greensboro, NC.
Future I-785 will follow the US 29 freeway from Greensboro to Danville, VA. It may eventually become part of an I-83 extension south of Baltimore.
In North Carolina, I-85 merges with I-40 between Greensboro and Hillsborough, just west of Durham. In Alamance County, the highway is also known as the Sam Hunt Freeway. Because I-85 was rerouted around Greensboro, it now splits from I-40 eight miles east of the original departure point.
A northward extension is envisioned for I-85. It would go through Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York State, ending at the Canadian border.
