This highway was created as a pork barrel project among Southern politicians to "link Birmingham to the world beyond." I-59 is parallelled by US 11 and part of the Southern Railroad. Some of the old steel plants can be found along the road as well. And one more thing: Between Meridian, MS and Birmingham, I-59 runs together with I-20.
