An extension of I-26 recently opened between Asheville, NC and the Tri-Cities of Tennessee. Part of this extension was formerly known as Interstate 181.
Currently, the highway ends at the Virginia border near Kingsport, TN. It's not clear if I-26 will extend towards Kentucky in the future. Kentucky says it has no plans of building I-26, and it is already committed to building new sections of what are planned to be extensions of Interstates 66 and 69.
