Notes for Marie Augusta Van Holsbeke
Marie moved from Belgium to the United States at age 5, around 1889, probably through Ellis Island. They settled into the Belgian community of Mishawaka, Indiana called the West End Neighborhood. This neighborhood was the South Central part of Mishawaka in the 1990s. Their family is rumored to have been one of the founders of the BK Club in this community, the Belgian National Meeting Club still in operation in the late 1990s. Marie attended St. Bavos Church in Mishawaka until she got married out of the faith. Marie and Jon could not be married in the church because Jon was not Catholic. They mostly likely had a civil ceremony in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Marie spoke fluent Belgian.
