Notes for Martin Thelen

Translation of Obituary of Martin Thelen in DER NORDSTERN (believed to be a German language newspaper in Stearns County, MN) from German to English by Sister Gordian Miller O.S.B. She is a sister of Math Miller that lives near Joe Seifermann. (Courtesy of Helen Seifermann Maier)

"Martin Thelen, well-known throught the county, and well-prepared by the sacraments of the dying, passed into the better hereafter at Lake George, Minnesota, on February 1, 1898 (?). The deceased was born 8 September 1843 at Niederbahr, District Adenau, in the Rhein Province, and reached the age of fifty-five. In the year 1880, he came to Minneosta and with his family made a home in Logering, Meeker County. In 1891, he transferred his home to Lake George, where he, through great endurance and untiring diligence, set up a beautiful place. However, unrelenting death came before he could enjoy, in his declining years, the fruit of his years of hard work. The deceased leaves a mourning widow with nine children; most of whom have already outgrown childhood. Because of his excellent attributes, the deceased enjoyed universal respect; the characteristics of a pius and practical Catholic were especially worthy of praise. The burial took place Friday in the company of a large number of mourners. The correspondent of the NORDSTERN expresses the hope that the petition asked for at the grave: "Lord, give him eternal rest" will have found a merciful hearing. the NORDSTERN offers, through it correspondent, sincere sympathy to the sadly bereaved widow and nine children."

Minnesota Naturalization Records Index from Stearns County lists a Martin Thelen on Reel 10, Code 26, Volume D, Page 517 and on Reel 10, Code 26, Volume DD, Page 1977.
