Notes for August Friederich Carl Schelle

August owned a lumberyard and a sawmill.

From the family records of Kurt Otto Shelle, Jr:

We have little personal information about August other than he was a "Zimmerpolier", which translates into foreman of carpenters. He may also have started the small business (processing logs into lumber) which his son, Otto Emil Oskar, later operated. There is also a question of the correct spelling of Carl. His birth record says Carl. His death record says Karl. His father's and Grandfather's name was spelled Carl in the references we have. Also, he lived in Sandow, which is a part of Cottbus today. He was nine when his father died and how he became a carpenter is not known. One reason may have been that Cottbus was the key city in the Spree Wald (forest around the Spree River) and lumbering had to be one of the key industries. Cloth making or weaving was apparently another.

When family was found in West Berlin by Kurt Otto Schelle, Jr, cousin Dorothea Bente Described Granfather August buisness as a lumberyard, or "Zimmer Platz".
