Discussion Circles
for Number the Stars
Find a group of three, you will stay in your group for the entire book so make sure you are with people you can work well with.
1st
person: Passage Finder
This
person is responsible for coming to class with five (5) passages from the
reading from the night before. Do not
make these passages longer than a paragraph.
This person is also responsible for an explanation of why he/she chose
this passage and why it is relevant to the story as a whole.
2nd
person: Discussion Director
This
person is responsible for coming to class with five (5) questions from the
reading from the night before. These
questions should cover the big ideas of the book. For example you should not ask: Who is the main character? Look at the big picture in these questions.
3rd
person: Secretary
This
person is responsible for taking notes of the group’s discussion. While everyone in your group is talking
about the previous night’s reading your job is to write down the major points
of your group’s discussion.
Go
ahead and assign each person in your group a job for tonight’s reading. These jobs will be changed every night. For example: if John is discussion director
on Wednesday he will be secretary on Thursday and so forth.
These
papers will be passed in everyday for a participation grade.
