GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

Students will:
¨ read a wide range of literature to build an understanding of themselves and the cultures of the world, to acquire new information, and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and non-fiction works. (#1)
¨ apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. (#3)
¨ apply their knowledge of language structure, language conventions, media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss texts. (#6)
¨ conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They will gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience. (#7)
¨ use a variety of technological and information sources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information to create and communicate knowledge. (#8)

INTRODUCTION:
We will review the predictions that they made at the end of class yesterday. Today we will see if your predictions were right.

PROCEDURES AND TEACHER’S NOTES:
Step 1:
Discussion circles for Number the Stars.
Step 2:
Remind them to take notes.
Discuss Night and Number the Stars
- How are the friendships different in these two books?
- Compare and contrast the connotations in the two books.
- How are the main characters in these books different?
- How are the families in these books different? How are they the same?
- How do these two stories help us see two sides of the story to the Holocaust?
Step 3:
Read Chapter 3 of Night silently and take notes on the chapter.
Step 4:
Chapter 3 discussion
- What happened in this chapter?
- How would you feel if you were separated from your family under these conditions?
- What did it mean when Elie said “never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever” (p 32)?
- Do you think it was okay for Elie to lie about his age? Why?
Step 5:
Silent reading free time
CLOSING:
Again we will make the same chart on the board as yesterday: “What we know” and “What we predict”. We will fill them in together again. I will close with telling them we will see if your predictions were right on Monday.

EXTENDERS:
Friday is free reading time at the end of class. An extender will not be needed because they will be reading silently from a book of their choice until the end of class.

I will have large print books for this student and I will make sure that his desk is close to the board so he can see and participate.
