DAY: 3 SUBJECT: World Literature and Composition GRADE: 10th

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

Students will:
¨ read a wide range of literature to build an understanding of themselves and the cultures of the world, to acquire new information, and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and non-fiction works. (#1)
¨ apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. (#3)
¨ apply their knowledge of language structure, language conventions, media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss texts. (#6)
¨ conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They will gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience. (#7)
¨ use a variety of technological and information sources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information to create and communicate knowledge. (#8)
¨ use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes

INTRODUCTION:
Now that we have a firm grip on what the Holocaust was, and how Hitler’s ideas shaped the Holocaust we need to look at Europe’s stance on all of this. We also need to realize the power behind Germany’s conquest over Europe. We are going to be in the library today researching the countries that fell the Germany and where Germany specifically placed their concentration camps.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

¨read, discuss, and analyze world literature representing diverse backgrounds and traditions (LA 10.36)
¨develop effective ways of telling and writing about literature (LA 10.38)
¨judge literature critically on the basis of personal response and literary analysis (LA 10.39)
¨use research process: selecting topic, formulating questions, identifying key words, choosing sources, skimming, paraphrasing, note-taking, organizing, summarizing, and presenting (Core Skills #4)
¨distinguish between fact and opinion (Core Skills #7)
PROCEDURES AND TEACHER NOTES:
Step 1:
The students will be given two maps of Europe (see attached) and they will be told they are to fill the map up with the following information:
-Map 1: the maps will be color coded (include the key on your map as well), according to if the country was a member of the Allied or Axis power, or if they remained neutral. They will find this information on the internet or books accessible to them in the library.
-Map 2: On this map the countries that were conquered by Germany will be color-coded. This information will also come from the internet and other library resources.
-If time permits they will place the location of the concentration camps on Map #2 as well. (Adapted from Kurt’s page)
CLOSING:
The students saw today the power of Hitler and the Nazis. Tomorrow we are going to begin to look at how this immense power affected individual lives.

If time remains we will read from Sky.
PROVISIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES:
I will be checking often with this student to see if any extra assistance is needed in seeing the computer or books. If his sight is very bad I will pair him up with someone to work with.
