GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

(Adapted from IRA/NCTE Standards)

Students will:

¨  read a wide range of literature to build an understanding of themselves and the cultures of the world, to acquire new information, and for personal fulfillment.  Among these texts are fiction and non-fiction works. (#1)

¨  apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. (#3)

¨  apply their knowledge of language structure, language conventions, media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss texts. (#6)

¨  conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems.  They will gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience. (#7)

¨  use a variety of technological and information sources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information to create and communicate knowledge. (#8)

¨      use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes

(e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).  (#12)

 

INTRODUCTION:

We have seen and read a lot about the Holocaust in the past three weeks.  We have learned of the genocide of a race, we have learned about people who were not Jews that risked their life to save others, we learned about the great German power that overtook half a continent.  How did this all end?  Today we are going to watch a movie that ended the Holocaust.  It is called Nuremberg.

 

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

Students will:

¨use inferential comprehension skills (e.g., predictions, comparisions, conclusions, implicitly stated main idea) (Core Skills #11)

¨use a variety of print and non-print resources (e.g., films, recordings, theatre, computer bases) as parts of the study of literature (Core Skills #13)

            ¨create hypotheses and predict outcomes (Core Skills #21)

            ¨defend conclusions (Core Skills #22)

            ¨speak so others can hear and understand (Core Skills #23)

 

 

 

PROCEDURES AND TEACHER’S NOTES:

Step 1:

Play Nuremberg

Step 2:

Discuss the movie.

-         What is going on in this movie?

-         Who do you think will win the trial?

 

CLOSING:

At the end of the movie I will make the columns listed “what we know” and “what we predict” for the movie.  Then I will tell them we will find if their predictions are right tomorrow.

 

ASSIGNMENTS:

None

 

 

EXTENDERS:

None, the movie will last the entire period.

 

PROVISIONS:

I will make sure the student is sitting close enough to the television screen so he can see it.
