GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

(Adapted from IRA/NCTE Standards)

Students will:

¨  read a wide range of literature to build an understanding of themselves and the cultures of the world, to acquire new information, and for personal fulfillment.  Among these texts are fiction and non-fiction works. (#1)

¨  apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. (#3)

¨  apply their knowledge of language structure, language conventions, media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss texts. (#6)

¨  conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems.  They will gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience. (#7)

¨  use a variety of technological and information sources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information to create and communicate knowledge. (#8)

¨      use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes

(e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).  (#12)

 

INTRODUCTION:

Today is a privilege, the same rules apply here as they do in our classroom.  Does everyone understand?  Act like the ladies and gentlemen I know you are.  Let’s go learn something new!

 

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

Students will:

¨vary reading speed and methods according to the type of material and purpose   of reading (LA 10.35)

¨read, discuss, and analyze world literature representing diverse backgrounds and traditions (LA 10.36)

              ¨distinguish between fact and opinion (Core Skills #7)

¨use inferential comprehension skills (e.g., predictions, comparisons, conclusions, implicitly stated main idea) (Core Skills #11)

¨use a variety of print and non-print resources (e.g., films, recordings, theater, computer bases) as parts of the study of literature (Core Skills #13)

              ¨draw reasoned conclusions from various sources (Core Skills #14)

              ¨use language appropriate to situation and audience (Core Skills #17)

Step 1:

Go to the Holocaust Museum

 

CLOSING:

Everyone acted beautifully today and I am very proud of everyone.  A subject like the Holocaust can evoke a lot of thoughts and feelings.  Tonight I want you all to think about those thoughts and feelings that have passed through you while we have been studying this subject.  Tomorrow we are going to work on expressing these through art.

-         permission slips

-         bus drivers

-         sack lunches

 

EXTENDERS:

If we get back before school ends we will read from Sky

PROVISIONS:

I will pair this student with someone that can help him see the materials at the museum.
