The Five Basic Ballet Positions
In the 17th Century a ballet teacher called Beauchamps developed five feet and arm positions that enabled dancers to keep their balance and still look elegant. Most ballet steps begin or end in one of these positions.

Get The Best From Your Class
Practice and rehearse at every chance.
Talk to your teacher if you need help - there are no stupid questions.
Try not to miss any classes.
Do not talk or distract other students.

Glossary of Ballet Terms
Arabesque : A type of adage step,
in which you balance on one leg with the other streched out behind you.
Attitude : A position in which you stand on one leg,
lifting and curving the other leg around you.
Barre : A wooden handrail which runs around the ballet studio,
which helps dancers to balance when they are doing warm up exercises.
Centrework : Exercises performed in the centre of the studio to improve balance and control.
Pointe : Dancing on the tips of your toes,
with help from stiffened shoes,
called pointe shoes.
Pirouette : A turning step.
Bras bas : Arms in the same position as first but lower in front of you.
Pliés : A bending exercise to streach muscles and improve turn out.
