FASTING FOR THE FOREST:

ENVIRONMENTALIST BEGINS HUNGER STRIKE TO STOP CUTTING OF
CALIFORNIA'S LAST OLD-GROWTH TREES

Moloney Demands That Governor Davis Uphold His Campaign Promise

Sacramento, Calif.,October 7, 2002 Susan Moloney, Executive
Director of the Campaign for Old Growth (CFOG), began a hunger strike
on the North Steps of the California State Capitol today. She vows to
continue her fast until Governor Gray Davis upholds his four-year old
campaign promise to preserve the state's old-growth trees.

In a March 1998 address to the Planning and Conservation League,
gubernatorial candidate Davis pledged to ensure that, "all old-growth
trees are spared from the lumberjack's axe."

Despite Davis's promise, the cutting of old-growth trees in
California continues unabated.

"We elected Governor Davis because he promised to protect the
environment, in part by putting an end to the barbaric practice of
cutting ancient trees. I am fasting to remind Governor Davis and the
voters of California that his promise remains unfulfilled at this
late hour in his term of office.  If candidate Davis wants our votes
this time, he needs to prove that he keeps his word," said Moloney.
"Old-growth trees are an integral part of our State's natural
heritage. They must be protected!"

Of the millions of acres of original forests that existed when
California gained statehood in 1850, less than three percent of these
old-growth trees remain today.

Moloney will be on the North Steps Monday thru Wednesday.  She will
be on the South Steps on Thursday and Friday.

If you are concerned about the logging of old-growth trees in
California, please contact Governor Davis and ask him to keep his
campaign promise.  His phone number is (916) 445-2841. His address is
Gray Davis, State Capitol, Sacramento, CA  95814.  His fax number is
(916) 445-4633.  His e-mail address is
