2] BACKGROUND about the Florida Alliance for
Safe Foods GE-Free Publix Campaign:
FASF, as part of the GE-Free Markets Coalition (includes
Greenpeace, Organic Consumers Association, the Sarasota
County Green Party, and more than a dozen other groups)
is calling on Publix Super Markets -- and a few other
leading national chains -- to remove GE ingredients
from its own brand ("private label") food products.
This is a reasonable request. For example, Trader Joe's
and Whole Foods - two large national grocery chains - have
already committed to remove GE ingredients from their own brands.
Publix should NOT be using untested, potentially unsafe
GE ingredients in its own brand products.
To date, Publix management has refused to even meet with
FASF, and has told FASF to take our concerns to Washington,
D.C., even though Publix management is well aware that the
powerful biotech industry lobbyists control the genetically
engineered foods agenda in both Congress and the Federal Government.
We're determined to keep up the pressure until Publix agrees
to do the right thing and STOPS using GE ingredients in
its own food products!
Please participate and help to spread the word.  Send a
strong message to Publix Super Markets that Publix should
STOP using GE ingredients in its own brand food products!
Please get involved! Call (941) 921-3330, or e-mail
[email protected] for more information.

6] Please VOTE to Outlaw Cruelty to Pigs: Amendment 10
*****************************************************
FASF endorses Amendment 10 on the November 5th Ballot. FASF
supports humane and sustainable food production.  Toward
that end, FASF joins dozens of other organizations and media
outlets in recommending a YES vote on Amendment 10 on the
Florida ballot.
The YES! on 10 campaign has placed a groundbreaking ballot
measure on the November 2002 ballot to outlaw the cruel
confinement of breeding pigs on industrialized factory
farms. The amendment seeks a ban on gestation crates'
- barren metal enclosures where breeding pigs are kept,
pregnant, for the vast majority of their lives.

7] THE INDUSTRIAL FOOD SYSTEM GETS ITS WISH:
IRRADIATED FOOD IS ON ITS WAY
Recent news...
Coming soon to your child's school lunches: irradiated meat.
Coming soon to your produce section: irradiated tropical fruit.
Coming soon to your Publix Super Market deli: irradiated beef.
The Bush administration's USDA has relaxed the rules on food
irradiation, allowing irradiation to be used more widely.
For an excellent primer on the hazards of food irradiation,
see: http://www.wildmatters.org/primer/index.htm
FASF will be posting to its web-site additional updates
about food irradiation in the near future.
