Sound proof:

#1: X’over Lounge

If you really want a different concert experience then we highly recommend 105.1 Crossover’s ‘Crossover Lounge.’

The series debuted last month at the Serendipity Lounge of the Discovery Suites to a full venue. Little wonder, really, as they put Asia’s Nightingale Lani Misalucha, a perennial crowd drawer, on the bill.

In fact, Lani is 105.1 Crossover’s only choice whenever they have to open a series. Lani is their “secret weapon.” She never fails.

Still, what really merited Crossover Lounge our thumbs up is the concept of just voice and piano performance. As we all know, this kind of set-up can either make or break an artist depending on his abilities.

If an artist is prone to flats and sharps, people hear it and cringe. Without the charisma to hold people’s attention with just the basics, then sorry for him. And if he is not a pro who can sing a variety of songs upon people’s request? Then he’d probably go home red in the face! That’s how tough performing in the series is. It’s not for mediocre singers.

But you know what even greater “power” any Crossover Lounge feature artist must have? The ability to make everything look so easy. And that’s what Lani Misalucha did when we watched her that night.

We also commend 105.1 Crossover for making Serendipity Lounge the series’ venue. Because of its’ hush-hush and exclusive ambience (the view of the city from the 22nd floor adds to it, surely), people were compelled to really listen to the music.

Indeed, it almost felt like a sin to go to the john or order food once the concert has started. Now, really, what other concert series can lay claim to keeping bladders in check?

Yes, yes, Lani mostly sang tunes she had already sung in other shows. Yes, she stuck to her forte (Is that such a bad thing?).

But why did it feel like we were hearing the repertoire for the very first time that night?

And why do we feel like giving ourselves a kick in the head for even asking that question?

Because the answer is obvious; as obvious as Crossover Lounge is a must-see for any concertgoer.

(Incidentally, another great 105.1 Crossover series, “Crossover Presents,” unveils Ogie Alcasid and Nyoy Volante on Aug. 13 and Pops Fernandez on Sept. 11 both at the Captain’s Bar, Mandarin Hotel)
