Sarah Bernhardt was during her lifetime, and still is in many quarters, considered to be the finest actress ever to tread the boards. Moreover, she was one of the great fashion trend-setters of her day. "The Divine Sarah", in fact, is the woman who is perhaps most responsible for popularizing the classic mousquetaire style of glove in America and Europe during the late 1870's and early 1880's.

Her beautiful voice, the grace of her movements, and her fiery personality made Sarah Bernhardt one of the most famous actresses of her day. She was very thin, with a pale face and frizzy red hair. But she was acclaimed everywhere as "The Divine Sarah''

Born Oct. 23, 1844, an illegitimate child of mixed French-Dutch parentage and of partly Jewish descent. At the age of 13 she entered the drama school of the Paris Conservatoire. Her debut at the Theatre Francais (later the Comedie Francaise) on Sept. 1, 1862, in Racine's Iphigenie en Aulide, was greeted with only mild interest. She soon quarreled with the Comedie and left it for an unsuccessful attempt at burlesque.

Sarah's real name was Henriette-Rosine Bernard. She studied acting at the Paris Conservatory. After she became a star in the 1870s, she opened the Sarah Bernhardt Theater in Paris, which she managed until her death. Her most popular role was in The Lady of the Camellias, known in America as Camille.
