In 1977 no trace was left of the cemetery, it had been abandoned and all stones removed. The inscriptions on four stones were copied by Velma Metzger, no dates, probably in the 1920’s with Pencil notes in the WRHS library.
John I . Harper settled in the Cuyahoga Vally in 1816. He started the cemetery as his private family burying ground and extended it to the use of others. He was buried there in 1849. At one time the cemetery had 100 stones, according to the testimony of old settlers of the area. It was used for the burial of captains of the canals boats on the Ohio to Lake Erie Canal and of the canal workers who died of swamp fever. It was surveyed to be on the south side of Old Rockside Road, but it was used as a throughfare and ended up on the right side of the road. Some of the stones were on the north side of the road in the 1950’s, according to Dr. Dennis Harrison, resident of Valley View an on the library staff at the WRHS. Gradually the area of the cemetery was diminished and its stones taken away. In 1970 when the Valley View Historical Society planned to fence the area and keep the three remaining stones, all three disappeared overnight.
