Old Rockport Cemetery, Lakewood
This cemetery was called the Old Rockport or Wagar Family Cemetery or “The Graveyard”.
This cemetery was located on Detroit Avenue between Belle and St. Charles Avenues, formerly Rockport Township, present city of Lakewood.
In 1977, no cemetery records have been found, and no trace was left of the cemetery. It’s former location is now a business block.
The inscriptions on the stones were copied by Edith Sherman and G. Elizabeth mettler, August 1929, typed two pages in the WRHS library. Mrs. Sherman was the Librarian at WRHS, and copied many cemetery inscriptions. This is a service to fellow genealogists, and I have taken every precaution to be precise, but I assume no responsibility for errors or omissions, nor any responsibility for damages resulting from the use of the information contained herein.
Mars Wagar settled in Rockport in 1820 and started the cemetery as a family burying ground. The first burial was Lucy D. Wagar in 1826. By 1828, Mars wagar had extended the use of the cemetery to his friends and neighbors. The last burial was about 1891. Gradually the cemetery became neglected, and in the 1920’s an effort was made to preserve it… but the mayor of Lakewood, the council and the owners could not agree. Some of the remains were moved to other cemeteries. In 1931 some of the land was deeded to the city of Lakewood by Edna Stall. In 1957 the Wagar Heirs sold the rest of the land. By then many of the stones had disappeared. One belonging to John Honan, builder of the Stone House, was given to the Lakewood Historical Society. Five stones still remained behind the garage at Lakewood City Hall, in 1977.
