results are at www.longsjo.com. i'm currently 37 out of 41. but let me tell you what happened yesterday. at 7:30 am i found out that the Middlesex Co sheriff had Christian Jones in custody at the Somerville District Court House. i received no warning that they were going to do it yesterday morning. (i would have told them to wait.) so i had to leave the office while my boss was away, leaving her an apologetic note, so i could drive back to somerville. my brakes were also going at this point, a problem i'd noticed wed morning which was getting steadily worse, but i was too stupid to take care of it wed afternoon. i wasn't sure it was a big problem until yesterday. so i went to court. the judge was taking his time coming on to the bench. i never saw him. finally at 10:20 (less than 2 hours before my time trial start one hour away in fitchburg) i decided to settle with christian. i'm embarrassed to say that i was so upset about making it to fitchburg that i started crying in front of the clerk. i've got to stop doing that crying thing. so christian and i worked out a payment plan, he got out of the cuffs (been dragged out of bed at 6 am i think and sat in cuffs for like 4 hours, put the fear of god in him i'm sure), i left. the pre-race routine was condensed: sandwiches in the car, listened to cracker (a bootleg from johnson), ate my clif bar. brakes were getting even worse. i made it to fitchburg sometime after 11:30, minutes before women's 3 registration closed. i changed but had no time for a warm-up before i was on the line at 12:12, nervous and distracted. i couldn't get into a good rhythm, which was frustrating because i'd felt pretty good when i was riding with dane the day before. and i turned on to route 2 by accident and had to come back, which must have cost me at least a minute. but mostly it was just that i was trying as hard as i could, and going very slowly. when the results came out, i was crushed. but to put it all in perspective: i made it into midas in fitchburg to get my brakes fixed. i was scared to drive the car at this point, was downshifting to slow down, etc. finally found the place. dropped off the car and brad drove me back to work. yes, even after i told my boss it was like the worst day of my life, she made me come in to work. thank goodness for brad, he rocks. so he sat on the floor while i finished my afternoon stuff. we drove back to fitchburg where my car was up on the lift with all the tires off. rich, the tall geeky mechanic, told me i was lucky to have made it in at all. i'd blown out the piston (?) on my left rear brake, which accounted for the sudden difference in braking power wed morning. all my brake fluid was gone. my front brake pads were gone. everything had to be replaced. luckily i had all that cash from christian which covered most of the $675 tab and the guys at the shop stayed late to fix my car. it's nice being a girl. so basically i'm really lucky i didn't hurt anyone or myself, and really stupid. clearly there's something wrong when bike racing is so important to me that i was willing to let christian out of jail and endanger myself just so i could get to my tt start. anyway, i made the time cut and i'm racing today. but i got back so late last night and am so sleep-deprived anyway that i'm thinking the rest of fitchburg is pretty much a wash. oh well. so yesterday was definitely one of those days when i was pretty sad that i no longer have anyone cuddly waiting for me at home. i figure today can't possibly be any worse.
